Probably my favorite pub in all of Ireland. Four nights per week are of the traditional Irish variety, and the remaining three keep it local and brilliant by featuring local Irish artists. I think her name is Lolo, but we did have a few pints that night. It is not a concert in the traditional sense but more musicians who are jamming together because they like to play together. Great little pub - friendly staff, interesting clientele, and usually some pretty good music. The best time that I had here was finally grabbing a small table, crowding around the makeshift candle in the whisky bottle, and talking over candlelight and having a beer with your friends.

To be clear, by band I actually mean group of strangers that showed up at the bar with instruments. We only visited by day, when it was fairly quiet, but we had a lovely time exchanging stories with the bar owner over a few drinks. The drink here is of good quality and reasonably priced: cheaper than what you'd expect in a City centre establishment. The beer selection is local and lovely, and the interior design is like taking a small walk-through of souvenirs from anyone who has ever visited, be it a t-shirt from Australia, a poster for Iceland, a scarf from France, or a keyring from America. For the best sounds, head there on Tuesdays from 9. There are a large number of medium-sized engineering companies and automotive suppliers — as well as a lively creative scene. The cultural diversity of Coburg is surprising. On our visit, there were about 8 musicians playing.

It's generally pretty crowded so be prepared to stand until a seat opens up. Still, we pushed our way to the back where the band was playing. Sometimes its traditional Irish music and sometimes a bit more contemporary, but they always play sitting at a table in the corner, there's no stage to speak of. At the front of the bar was a table of red-nosed, older men and a few younger men mixed in, all with different instruments from an antique button box to a flute, drinking pints and shots of whiskey between songs, and the entire bar lulled into a wonderful drunken stupor by the continuous sounds of their music. We split our time between the 2 levels, going down for pints and to watch the band for a few minutes at a time. Head here on Sundays for the best in traditional music. Running a pub is an expensive business in Ireland and people coming in to listen to music for free taking up seats and space of paying customers would put them out of business.
